RISE.365

Joyclen Buffong, founder and director of RISE.365 youth project, wins Points of Light award for outstanding commitment to the community

Joyclen set up RISE.365 to reach, inspire, support, and empower young people and the community.

About RISE.365

At RISE.365 they run a range of services, including a mentoring programme for young people aged 13-28. One young person who received mentoring commented: “I don’t really like speaking to people about stuff I have going on, but my mentor at RISE.365 makes me feel comfortable to be me…I don’t feel judged, just accepted for who I am and where I’m at in my life. Having these sessions has helped so much.”

RISE.365 also run a parent support programme including mediation and advocacy to help with family challenges, including behaviour, communication, and school exclusions.

In response to the unlawful strip and search of Child Q, RISE.365 launched a video campaign to highlight the adultification of young black girls. The key message of the campaign is that every child needs to be respected and cared for. Joyclen comments: “young black girls have such little trust in the authorities that are designed to protect their human rights.”

Points of Light

The well-deserved Points of Light award, the latest of several awards for RISE.365, is a cross-party programme scheme supported by all MPs which recognises outstanding volunteers, charity leaders and community champions for the positive change they are making.

Receiving the award Joyclen said: “I am grateful that the work of my organisation RISE.365 and all the amazing things our young people are doing has had recognition at this level. We will continue to make a difference in the lives of young people and the community, changing the narrative of how some young people are perceived is fundamental.”

In addition to the recent Points of Light accolade, Joyclen’s dedication to Hackney has been recognised with a number of awards, including an Outstanding Positive Impact Award, 2020, Outstanding Service to The Lives of Young People 2021, and the Best Youth and Community Organisation 2022.

Hackney CVS trustee

As well as directing RISE.365, we are delighted that Joyclen recently joined the Hackney CVS board of trustees, bringing with her over twenty years’ experience of leadership and a wealth of experience of working with young people and local communities.
