International Women’s Day celebration at the Adiaha Antigha Centre

Hackney CVS held an event at the Adiaha Antigha Centre on 7 March to celebrate International Women’s Day.

Bejal Shah, interim CEO at Hackney CVS, said: “Our International Women’s Day event this year was such a powerful gathering. The room was alive with shared experiences—stories of struggle, resilience, and triumph. It was both a celebration and a vital space to highlight ongoing challenges.”

Bejal added: “Speakers from local organisations led by and supporting women from Black and Global Majority backgrounds shed light on the realities of issues such as domestic abuse and fighting for justice that reflects all our experiences including disability, race, sexuality, class, age, migration status and more. This work must go beyond just one day, and I am committed to making collective action and community strength a year-round focus for Hackney CVS.”

Individuals and organisations who attended last year’s event contributed their ideas on the change they want to see. These were distilled into a 5-point pledge.

The 5-point pledge:

  1. For women to be appreciated, spoken to and respected just the same as male counterparts.
  2. To empower the future generation of women to speak out.
  3. Support women in having a stronger voice by actively listening.
  4. To be open to women-centred system change, influenced by women.
  5. To speak out when you see injustice.
