Hackney CVS community awards 2024

2024 awards event

Winners announced at our annual awards event

On Tuesday 16 July 2024, we had a fantastic time celebrating a host of inspiring individuals and community projects at our annual awards event at St Mary’s Secret Garden.

The evening was expertly compered by Cindy Agbonwaneten and Nya Chen, two of Hackney CVS’s Youth Leaders.

Award winners included Headway East London’s steering group (photo above left, taken by Amelia Wornell). Together Better, a Volunteer Centre Hackney (VCH) service, was another award winner at the event.

Lauren Tobias, CEO at VCH, said: “We hugely appreciate the hard work of all our volunteers, and the role they play in supporting one another and the NHS. We couldn’t do it without them.”

The awards event

It was a truly memorable evening. The event was a chance for the voluntary and community sector to come together to applaud the incredible work taking place in our community.

And while the weather was variable, a few short downpours were not enough to dampen our spirits!

It was also an opportunity to enjoy Turkish and Caribbean food provided by Hackney’s lunch clubs and to hear some great singing by Tasia Marsh, another Hackney CVS Youth Leader.

A special posthumous award was presented in honour of Laura Muzinga Lutumba for dedication to the community.

Tony Wong, CEO of Hackney CVS, said: “We would now like to make a special posthumous award in honour of Muzinga Lutumba, Chairwoman of Hackney Congolese Women’s Support Group who sadly passed away recently.”

He added: “Many colleagues at Hackney CVS and across the sector had come to know Lumumba in recent times and recognised her care and dedication in supporting the local Congolese community.”

The Community Achievement Awards are made in memory of our founder, Adiaha Antigha (1949-2006), who made a huge contribution to Hackney CVS and to the sector as a whole.

There were also awards for eight Young Achievers. These award winners also received a recognition certificate and a cash award of £150.

The Young Achievers Awards are held in memory of our former Youth Programmes Manager, Gary Francis.

A big thank you to our sponsors, Qlic IT.
