SUMMARY:Supporting asylum seekers and refugees in Hackney
DESCRIPTION:Come along to find out how you can support asylum seekers and refugees in Hackney. \nThe evening will begin with a screening of Child Migrants Welcome?\, a short film that explores experiences of welcome and non-welcome of unaccompanied child migrants from across the UK\, both from the point of view of the young people themselves but also those who know or care for them. This film is part of the Child Migrant Stories project (www.childmigrantstories.com). \nThe screening will be followed by a panel talking about how you can support unaccompanied asylum seeking children through different projects. The discussion will include representatives from: \n– Hackney Council\, who have a specific team supporting young Unaccompanied Asylum Seekers and are currently recruiting hosts and carers for them \n– JCORE\, who run a befriending project for unaccompanied asylum seekers \n– Refugee Support Network\, who run an education mentoring programme for young unaccompanied asylum seekers \nThere will also be an opportunity to view material in Hackney Museum’s collection\, which shows that Hackney has been a safe haven for people fleeing countries from around the world\, since at least the 17th century. \nWhether you have a spare bedroom or a spare hour\, come and see how you can help. \nThis event is co-hosted by Hackney Museum & Hackney Social Services\, to mark Refugee Week 2019. \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Hackney Fostering Information Session
DESCRIPTION:Being a foster carer plays a hugely important role for a child in care. You will be supporting them with school and medical appointments\, encouraging positive activities\, overcoming emotional or physical trauma\, whilst providing a safe and nurturing environment they can call home. \nFostering can be difficult\, not just for you and the child involved\, but all families involved. Nonetheless\, it’s also incredibly rewarding. You’ll be making a difference to children and young people who need your help and love. \nDue to current demand for this service\, we need to recruit at least 20 foster carers a year. If you have ever thought about fostering and have a spare room\, come and speak to us. These sessions are hosted by the recruitment team and foster carers\, providing a perfect platform for you to ask questions and get a real account of the application process and life as a foster carer. \nRead more
